SUNDAY CALLING
Under Ben Falcone’s tight direction, the Groundling’s “B” company offers one of the lightest, freshest and least offensive sketch shows I’ve seen in years. The closest thing to overt sexuality is a hilariously innocent look at auditions for “Hooter Girls” presented as a pastiche from A Chorus Line as written by Candace Brown and performed with glee by most of the company’s women. Another buoyant musical comedy bit is Colleen Smith’s “Unconventional Waiter,” an extremely odd and disturbingly funny paean to a rude restaurant server. The most outlandish piece is Paige King’s “Conch,” in which an unattractive young woman carries on a beach-blanket affair with a shellfish — it is remarkable how long this joke works. Most of the sketches are quick and energetic with not a single moment of eye-rolling stupidity. As often in a Groundlings show, the improv bits are weak but fortunately brief, few and far between. Groundling Theater, 7307 Melrose Ave.; Sun., 7:30 p.m.; indef. (323) 934-9700.

BEACH BLANKET SUNDAY
While there’s nary a Frankie and Annette parody in the bunch, the Groundling Sunday Company’s latest sketch comedy show features some great surf riffs as bridges between the skits, courtesy of musical director Willie Etra and percussionist Greg Kanaga. One of the most hilarious pieces is Colleen Smith’s near silent “Intellectual Debate.” Starring Smith, Candace Brown and Hyla Matthews, the sketch skewers pretentious coffeehouse hipsters through a series of visual gags. Mike Rose scores with “Camp,” a sketch about two senior counselors (Rose and Brown) handing out cabin assignments to novice campers. The highlight of Act 2 is Kent Sublette’s “Grease Is the Word,” a piece about a bowdlerized high school musical production. Most of the bits hit their targets, and Act 1 is consistently hilarious, but Act 2 seems rather anemic by comparison. Director Ben Falcone might purchase a small hoe to weed out a few patches of underwritten material. Nevertheless, the ensemble is talented, and Falcone deserves kudos for keeping the handful of improv bits short, focused and funny. Groundling Theater, 7307 Melrose Ave., Hlywd.; Sun., 7:30 p.m.; indef. (323) 934-9700. Written 04/01/2004 (Sandra Ross)
